Personal storytelling has existed since the dawn of time, but nonfiction is often not seen as creative or an art form. In this class, we will consider nonfiction and personal narrative as a mode rather than a genre that is in opposition to fiction or poetry. Students in this course will study, practice, produce and revise short pieces of personal essay or memoir, while examining basic structures of the essay, long-form narratives, and other forms of nonfiction and life writing. Together, we will study the anatomy of a scene, the use of language, point-of-view, voice, and content through both assigned readings and writing produced by students. Writings and readings in the course will acquaint students with memoir writing, the personal essay, culture writing, the lyric essay, and more non-traditional nonfiction forms. Class will not meet March 5th.
