Candyland: The Land of Hope
Candyland: The Land of Hope is a compilation of grotesque beings and a sugar-coated veneer that covers reality.
With these imaginary creatures, I explore the connections between power and the vilification of minorities in current US politics, and how those narratives impact underserved portions of the population. I am interested in how basic ideas have played a crucial role in stirring up anger and violence and the distress that this causes to the most vulnerable
About the Artist
Painter and designer Sheila Cuellar-Shaffer, a native of Palmira, Colombia, graduated with an Architectural Design degree from the Fundación Academia de Dibujo Profesional and studied Fine Arts at the Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes in Cali, Colombia. She is a 2017 PF/PCA Flight School Fellow.
Sheila's work has been shown at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Susquehanna Museum of Art, and Westmoreland Museum of American Art to name a few. Her design "Democracy is Power" was chosen by the Amplifier Foundation curatorial team, which includes Shepard Fairey, for #powertothepolls, a national touring exhibit organized by the Amplifier Foundation/Women's March. Sheila serves on the board of the Westmoreland Diversity Coalition.
