The Pittsburgh-based artist was honored as PCA's "Artist of the Year" in 1985. Qualters' style, familiar to many Pittsburghers, features the artist's commentary - appearing as cursive text - in the borders of his work. This exhibit has been curated by art historian and independent curator Vicky A. Clark, who has also authored a new book, "Robert Qualters: Autobiographical Mythologies."
In four decades Qualters has had more than 30 solo shows in galleries and museums in the region, including at Carnegie Museum of Art. He's created more than two dozen public murals and site-specific installations, including commissions from Mercy Hospital, Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, Three Rivers Arts Festival, and Oxford Development. He has also created more than a dozen murals with Pittsburgh high school students.
Qualters holds a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts, and an MFA from Syracuse University. He has taught painting at the State University of New York, Oswego; University of Pittsburgh; Carlow College; Slippery Rock State University; Indiana University of PA; West Virginia University; and Carnegie Mellon University. He has also been artist-in-residence at CAPA (Pittsburgh's High School for Creative and Performing Arts).
His work is held in the permanent collections of Carnegie Museum of Art; the Oakland California Museum of Art; and the Westmoreland County Museum of Art; as well as in the offices of PPG Industries, Alcoa, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Heinz Endowments; and in private collections throughout Southwestern PA. He is a past president of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. His website is: www.qualtersart.com
