Arts in Education showcases PF/PCA’s Artists in Schools & Communities work within Pittsburgh Brashear High School in Allegheny County, Ambridge Junior High School in Beaver County, and Margaret Bell Miller Middle School in Greene County.  Each of these schools had an Artist in Residence who collaborated with the faculty and students to create large-scale fiber art. These are three of the 57 Artist Residency Projects implemented by PF/PCA this year.

In conjunction with FI2016, a Pops des Fleurs fiber/steel installation combining fabric-dyeing techniques with sculptural elements was created by Brashear fiberarts students during a 20-day residency project led by Resident Artists Amber Coppings and Rose Clancy in collaboration with Art Teacher Jennie Caning.  Students also learned about some of the historical aspects of fiber art and parameters of outdoor public art.

At Ambridge Junior High School 7th and 8th grade students and Art Teacher Jamie Zbrzezny worked together with Resident Artist Saihou Njie to create a large collaborative fiber mural inspired by Adinkra symbols from Ghana in West Africa.  Students utilized multiple surface-design techniques including batik, stenciling, and stitching while also learning about symbolism, color, and pattern.

8th grade students and Art Teachers Kristen Venturino and Colby Love of Margaret Bell Middle School in Greene County worked with Resident Artist Maritza Mosquera. The final silkscreen printing project created from their images was developed into a collaborative mural/painting that represent their home, their neighborhood and their interests inside and out.

These projects were supported in part by the Arts in Education Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. The Arts in Education Partner serving Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, and Washington counties is Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.  Additional project support was provided by Fiberart International 2016 with a grant from the Colcom Foundation, The Grable Foundation, and the Monon Center with a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
