Collage ME Photography (Summer Camp 2018)

Step back into a time when knights, princesses, and the beasts they fought weren't just characters in fairytales! Learn about heraldry, create your own armor, design a castle and depict fantastic beasts. Use metals and fibers to sculpt and weave, and eventually transform yourself into a medieval alter ego.

Auto Design Intensive (Summer Camp 2018)

Create the car of the future! Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and The Ellis School are partnering to offer a new Car Design Summer Intensive. Blending drawing, sculpture, and engineering, this two-week camp will introduce participants to major components of automobile design. With field trips to The Auto Palace, participants will study and draw inspiration from a rare collection of Porsche sports cars. Campers will develop portfolios of their own car designs and create clay prototypes to illustrate personal design interests.

Digital Animation Workshop (Summer Camp 2018)

This workshop serves as an introduction to digital illustration for students interested in drawing, animating, and creating characters and worlds of their own. You'll learn how to create computer-generated 2D animations using a stylus and graphics tablet, while referencing animations viewed in class to inform and improve your work. Work with Adobe Animate to explore the vast possibilities of animation, and begin bringing your own unique stories to life! Foundations of Filmmaking (A) (Summer Camp 2018)

Learn the visual language used in movies. In this camp you'll participate in all the different phases of filmmaking: pre-production, production, and post-production. You'll work as part of a crew, learning how to use digital video cameras and Adobe editing software to create original short films. In-class screenings and critiques will inform your work. Become familiar with using a sewing machine and learn the basics of joining fabric. Utilize a number of different machine and hand stitches, explore fundamental sewing techniques, and broaden the horizons of fiber artwork. Sink your hands into the world of ceramics! Develop fundamental ceramic skills as you experiment with various processes of creating clay artwork. Work up from experimenting with air-dry and paper clays to designing pieces built to withstand the heat of the kiln. Use drawing, painting, and sculpting to sketch and build prototypes of your projects. Personalize projects with glazes before they are fired in the kiln and ready to take home. (Due to the dying and firing time needed to complete a ceramic piece, artworks might need to be picked up at a later date).

Dig into the nitty and gritty of ceramics during during this ceramic study. For the first week our teaching artists will guide you in learning and perfecting the art of wheel throwing and handbuilding. Create works that are both functional and sculptural by working through designing and problem solving during the making process. In week two we will continue to create work as well as dabble in a variety of different finishings such as Raku, low fire, mid fire, and high fire kilns.

Girls Remake Horror Intensive (Summer Camp 2018)

Traditionally, horror films are written and directed by and for men. In 2018, the 50th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead, this two-week intensive camp invites high schoolers who identify as female to reimagine the genre. Students will receive instruction in the history of horror cinema and in basic filmmaking techniques. Then, instructors who also work in the field as professional filmmakers and horror writers will guide students through the process of writing, shooting and editing a short horror film. The final product will be presented as part of Pittsburgh’s celebration of George Romero and Night of the Living Dead in October.

Digital Photography Workshop (Summer Camp 2018)

Harness the power of digital photography! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll improve your aesthetic and technical skills through guided practice and critical analysis. You’ll learn about shot composition, work with lights, and photo safari through the local neighborhood in search of subjects. Industry professionals and fine art photographers will visit to share their work and offer feedback about yours. Finish off the week by learning Adobe Lightroom essentials and creating a digital compilation of your best work. Bring your own digital camera to camp or borrow one of ours. This workshop is held at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, 477 Melwood Avenue, Pittsburgh 15213.

During this one week camp you’ll take a look at the different ways you can use just your hands to create works of master level skill. Find a niche in what's found in a ditch at PCA!

If you want to learn more about taking pictures, this is the camp for you! Learn what actually goes into the process of photography by working with pinhole cameras and making photograms. Then, experiment with digital photography toward the end of the week.

Become familiar with using a sewing machine and learn the basics of joining fabric. Utilize a number of different machine and hand stitches, explore fundamental sewing techniques, and broaden the horizons of fiber artwork. Learn how to create your own movie using claymation, the popular animation technique used in films such as Coraline and Wallace and Gromit! Campers will use tablets, clay and Adobe editing software to make their own short movies, complete with a soundtrack. In-class animation screenings will complement the hands-on experience.

Learn the visual language used in movies. In this camp you’ll participate in all the different phases of filmmaking: pre-production, production, and post-production.
